I am an illustrator and creative arts facilitator from North East Scotland. The landscapes of Scotland and the creatures which might frequent them (both real and imagined) inspire my work.
I grew up in a small village and have always loved stories, folklore and painting. I studied the History of Art, where my dissertation focussed on the therapeutic potential of art. Since then, I have undertaken courses in childrens picture book development via the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration and Leith School of Art. I believe stories are magical. I also believe story telling to be a crucial way of understanding the world around and before us, as well as what’s to come.
Sustainability and a focus on the natural world are important to my work and I frequently work outdoors, drawing from life (often with my dog, Penny). I work in mixed media, using varied handmade textures, cut paper and gouache.
I have fifteen years experience working in health and social care settings as a creative arts facilitator and later, as a mental health nurse. Illustration and mental health care both require an understanding and appreciation of narratives. The connection between our individual stories, the narratives we live by or have forced upon us and how we understand and express these inspire my work.
